Grant Government Medical College is a public medical college located in Mumbai, India, affiliated to the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences. Founded in 1845, it is one of the oldest medical colleges in South Asia. Its establishment followed efforts by Sir Robert Grant, Governor of Bombay, who sought to create a systematic institution for medical education in the city. After his death, the college was named in his honor following a proposal by Jagannath Shankarsheth. The foundation stone was laid on 30 March 1843, and the building was completed in October 1845. Alongside the college, a 'School of Practice,' later known as Sir J.J. Hospital, was created with a donation from Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy, opening for patients on 15 May 1845. Admission was open without caste or creed restrictions to candidates aged 16–20 who met academic and character requirements. The first class of students was admitted on 1 November 1845, including both free and stipendiary students. The first professors were Charles Morehead, John Peet, and Herbert John Giraud. The college's clinical affiliate is the Sir J.J. Group of Hospitals, comprising Sir J.J. Hospital, St George Hospital, Gokuldas Tejpal Hospital, and Cama and Albless Hospital.
