The Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS) is an Indian research institute for social sciences and humanities located in New Delhi, close to Delhi University. It was founded in 1963 by Rajni Kothari using a grant from Prof. Richard L. Park of the Asia Foundation, and is largely funded by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR). Initially housed at Indraprastha Estate in a building owned by the Indian Adult Education Association, CSDS moved to its present location in 1966–1967. The institute's library, started with a few bookshelves in the IAEA basement, grew into a full library by 1970, holding about 29,000 books, 5,000 bound journal volumes, and subscriptions to more than 130 journals, with special collections on Asia and Africa, ecology, human rights, and Hindi literature. The CSDS Data Unit, established in 1965, maintains archives of survey data on political behaviour and elections in India. Programmes operated by the centre include the Lokniti Programme for Comparative Democracy, the Sarai Programme, and the Indian Language Programme. Awadhendra Sharan is the current director. In 2025, the ICSSR issued a show-cause notice to CSDS citing administrative and financial irregularities.
