UNIVERSITY OF LUCKNOW

The University of Lucknow (LU), officially UoL, is a public research university in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India. It was founded in 1864 as Canning High School, later upgraded to Canning College in 1866, and became the University of Lucknow in 1920. It is one of India's 17 oldest universities established during British India, the 10th oldest in present-day India, and the first state university in Uttar Pradesh. Its main campus is located at Badshah Bagh on University Road, a historic royal garden originally developed by Nawab Naseer-ud-Din Haider. Additional campuses exist at Jankipuram and a developing one in Sitapur district. The university is the largest state university in Uttar Pradesh, comprising 13 faculties, 51 departments, and 16 institutes and centres, with 556 affiliated colleges across Lucknow and surrounding districts, including Raebareli, Hardoi, Sitapur, and Lakhimpur Kheri since 2020. It is the only state university in Uttar Pradesh granted Category-I autonomy by the UGC and the first public university in the state to receive an A++ NAAC accreditation. Historically, Canning College was affiliated with the University of Calcutta (1867–1887) and later the University of Allahabad (1888–1920) before the University of Lucknow was established.
