Surendranath Law College
Surendranath Law College, known in Bengali as সুরেন্দ্রনাথ আইন কলেজ and formerly called Ripon College, is a postgraduate law college in Kolkata, West Bengal, affiliated with the University of Calcutta. It began as the Presidency School in 1882, was handed to Surendranath Banerjee in 1884, and was renamed the Presidency Institution before becoming Ripon College, named after Viceroy George Robinson, 1st Marquess of Ripon. In 1885, its Post-Graduate Department of Law was affiliated to Calcutta University as an independent professional college, making it the third oldest law college of British India. In 1949, the college was renamed Surendranath Law College to honor its founder. Its women's section was established in 1931 by Mira Datta Gupta, its first principal. Notably, Swami Vivekananda delivered his first Calcutta address here after his 1893 Chicago speech, and Rabindranath Tagore read an essay at the college in 1911. The college received recognition from the University Grants Commission in 1972 and now offers LLM courses. Its notable alumni include Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India, and several other prominent judges, politicians, and freedom fighters.
