Dr. H. Gordon Roberts Hospital, also called KJP Hospital (Khasi Jaintia Presbyterian Hospital), is one of the oldest medical centres in Meghalaya, situated in Shillong. Founded by Dr. Hughes Gordon Roberts, who arrived in Shillong in 1913 and began work at a small dispensary near the KJP Girls' High School, the hospital's building construction started in 1915 in the Jaiaw area of the town. It was officially opened on 25 March 1922 by the Governor of Assam, Sir William Marris, as a 90-bed facility known as the Khasi Hills Welsh Mission Hospital. Roberts served as its first chief medical officer. The hospital was for many years one of the few institutions in northeast India capable of major surgery. Dr. R. A. Hughes later expanded facilities, introducing the first blood bank in Shillong and modern equipment. After missionaries departed, the Khasi Jaintia Presbyterian Synod took over management in 1969, and in 1981 the hospital was renamed The Khasi and Jaintia Presbyterian Synod Hospital, Jaiaw Shillong. Subsequent medical superintendents have included Dr. P. Lamare, Dr. K. Ropmay, Dr. Sandi Syiem, and Dr. David D. Tariang.
