NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNICAL TEACHERS TRAINING AND RESEARCH, CHENNAI

National Institute of Technical Teachers' Training and Research, Chennai (NITTTR) is a deemed-to-be university under a distinct category, functioning under the Ministry of Education, Government of India, located in Tharamani, Chennai. It began in 1964 as one of four Regional Institutes of Teacher Training (RITT) established to provide in-service and induction training to faculty of Engineering and Polytechnic institutions. The RITT later became the Technical Teachers Training Institute (TTTI), and in 2003 was renamed National Institute of Technical Teachers' Training and Research. The campus, near Rajiv Gandhi Salai and TIDEL Park, has two entrances and four extension centers in Bengaluru, Kalamassery, Vijayawada, and Hyderabad. A.P. Jambulingam was the founder Principal, G.B. Jaiprakash Narain was the first Director (2003–2006), and Usha Natesan currently heads the institute as its first female director. NITTTR Chennai has nine departments and three centers, conducts about 250 training programmes annually for around 7,500 trainees, and has trained nearly 3,000 international trainees since 1982. As a deemed university since 2024, it offers seven postgraduate programs, an MBA in Business Analytics, and three doctoral programs in Engineering, Engineering Education, and Management. It also participates in the SWAYAM online education initiative.
