JNAN CHANDRA GHOSH POLYTECHNIC KOLKATA
Jnan Chandra Ghosh Polytechnic is a government technical education institute located in the Mominpur area of Kolkata, West Bengal, providing diploma courses in engineering. The institute is named in honor of Sir Jnan Chandra Ghosh (1894–1959), a distinguished Indian chemist renowned for his contributions to scientific research, industrial development, and technology education in India. Ghosh served as the Head of the Department of Chemistry at Dacca University, Director of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, the first Director of the newly formed Eastern Higher Technical Institute in 1950 (later renamed IIT Kharagpur in 1951), Vice Chancellor of the University of Calcutta, and Director-General of Industries and Supplies for the Government of India. He was also known for his scientific work on the anomaly of strong electrolytes, photocatalysis, and the Fischer–Tropsch synthesis, as well as his guidance of research into Indian industrial chemical production. The polytechnic named after him reflects his legacy in promoting technical and engineering education in India, particularly in the region of Kolkata where he had strong academic ties through Calcutta University.
