Pithapur Rajah's Government College (Autonomous)
Pithapur Rajah's Government College, also known as P. R. Government College, is an autonomous institution in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. Initially established as a middle school in 1852, it faced financial difficulties leading to temporary closure in 1862, before being revived in 1863 with government funding and support from the Pithapuram zamindar. In August 1884, it was elevated to a second-grade college, affiliated with the University of Madras, and named Pithapur Rajah's College. It was incorporated under the Indian Companies Act in 1892 and became largely self-sustaining by 1903-04, educating nearly 500 students and promoting women's education through fee exemptions. In 1952, the college was taken over by the government, becoming P. R. Government College, and it celebrated its centenary in 1984. The college has two campuses, the Science College campus and the Arts College campus spanning about 28 acres. In 2000, it was granted autonomous status by the UGC, and in 2010, it was recognized as a College with Potential for Excellence. It is affiliated to the Adikavi Nannaya University and accredited by NAAC with an A grade (CGPA 3.17).
