Maulana Azad College
Maulana Azad College is a government-administered college of liberal arts, commerce and science located near the 'Lotus crossing' junction of Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road and S. N. Banerjee Road in central Kolkata, West Bengal. It is affiliated to the University of Calcutta and offers undergraduate courses (B.A., B.A. Hons, B.Com. Hons, B.Sc. Hons) as well as postgraduate courses (M.A. and M.Sc., including English, Zoology and Urdu). The college also teaches languages associated with Muslim culture such as Urdu, Arabic and Persian. It holds an 'A+' NAAC accreditation (2025) and has been designated a 'Centre of Potential for Excellence' by the UGC. Founded on 9 December 1926 by Victor Bulwer-Lytton, then Governor of Bengal, it was originally called Islamia College, established to promote Islamic learning and general education among Muslims in British India. After independence, it was renamed Central Calcutta College and opened to students of all faiths, before adopting its current name in 1960 in memory of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. It became co-educational in 1990. Notable alumni include Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, founding father of Bangladesh, who studied there and stayed at Baker Hostel, now home to the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum.
