The institution traces its academic roots to 1972, when Jawaharlal Nehru University opened a Post-Graduate Centre at Canchipur, later absorbed into the new university in 1981. Today it comprises nine schools of studies and forty-seven academic departments, and it affiliates 119 colleges, including three medical colleges and its sole constituent college, the Manipur Institute of Technology.
