Calcutta National Medical College

Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital (CNMCH), colloquially known as Chittaranjan Hospital, is a public medical college and hospital located in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. It originated from the National Medical Institute, or Jatiya Ayurbigyan Vidyalaya, founded on 14 April 1921 as a product of the Non-cooperation movement and inaugurated by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. It was formed by the amalgamation of the National Medical Institute and Calcutta Medical Institute. Established in 1948, the institute was nationalized and taken under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (West Bengal) in 1967. The founder principal was Dr. Sundari Mohan Das. The college is accredited by the National Medical Commission and was affiliated with the University of Calcutta until 2003, after which it became affiliated with the West Bengal University of Health Sciences. CNMC has pre-clinical, para-clinical, and clinical departments, and offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and paramedical courses. The attached hospital, one of the largest government hospitals in West Bengal, has 1,470 beds and received the LaQshya Certificate for maternity care. The college also hosts AGON, an annual cultural festival organized by its Students' Union since 1980.
