ST. ANN S COLLEGE

St Ann's College is a co-residential college located in North Adelaide, South Australia. Originally established for female boarders, it later admitted students of either gender. Its residents attend three South Australian universities: the University of Adelaide, the University of South Australia, and Flinders University. The college is privately owned and operates as a not-for-profit, receiving no funding from government, church, or university sources. The idea for the college arose in 1924 when Sir Josiah Symon proposed a women's college for University of Adelaide students. Fundraising efforts by graduates such as Violet Plummer, Helen Mayo, Constance Finlayson, and Pauline Grenfell Price, along with a donation from Sidney Wilcox, led to the college's establishment. St Ann's College officially opened in 1947 with 16 residential students, named after Ann Wilcox, Sidney Wilcox's mother. By 2007, it housed 197 students in single rooms, with newer buildings featuring ensuites and air conditioning. The college is governed by a council, executive, and finance committee, with a chair, 13 governors, and two ex officio members. As of 2024, Wendy Fleming serves as principal and CEO. The college's Latin motto is 'Per Litteras Lumen', meaning 'light through letters'. St Ann's has residential advisors and academic tutors, and its College Club organizes social and sporting events, including competition for the Douglas Irving Cup.
