St. Francis College for Women

St. Francis College for Women is a Catholic minority institution situated in Begumpet, Hyderabad, Telangana, India. It was established in 1959 by the Sisters of Charity of St. Bartolomea Capitanio and St. Vincenza Gerosa for the education of women. The college draws its inspiration from the teachings of Jesus Christ, described as its "norm, protector, and guide." As a minority institution, it asserts its constitutional right under Article 30(1) regarding management and administration. The college has been recognized by India Today Magazine as the Best Arts College, Best Science College, and Best Commerce College in Hyderabad. In 2013, an American Corner Library was established at the college by the Consulate General of the United States, Hyderabad, to provide access to materials on American life and culture and foster an Indo-US partnership. In 2019, the college faced controversy over a dress code policy restricting sleeveless clothing, shorts, and short kurtis, which led to student protests after a measurement check incident involving the principal. The rules were later scrapped and revised. Notable alumni include IAS officer Smita Sabharwal, surgeon Sailakshmi Balijepally, and actors Lakshmi Manchu, Malavika Nair, and Nikitha Narayan.
