Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (GMC) is a public medical college located in Secunderabad, India, affiliated with Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences, having originally been affiliated with NTR University of Health Sciences. Founded on 14 September 1954 as People's Medical College at Humayun Nagar, it was established because Osmania Medical College could not meet the demand for physicians. Dr. Syed Nizamuddin Ahmed was its first principal. Renamed after Mahatma Gandhi, it was inaugurated in 1955 by President Rajendra Prasad. After financial trouble, the Hyderabad government took over the college in 1956, and it moved to Basheerbagh in 1958, later relocating to Musheerabad in 2003. Its teaching hospital, Gandhi Hospital, originated as an 1851 infirmary, later known as King Edward Memorial Hospital, and was renamed Gandhi Hospital in 1958. The college offers MBBS, BPT, MD/MS, MCh, and BSc nursing and paramedical courses, admitting 250 MBBS students and 241 postgraduate students annually. The hospital is a 1,200-bed facility with 27 departments performing tens of thousands of consultations and operations yearly. Alumni founded the Gandhi Medical College Global Alliance in 2005 to support educational and charitable initiatives.
