The West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS) is a public medical university in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, established in 2003 under an Act of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. It was created to bring uniformity to medical education across the state, which had previously been supervised by multiple universities, leading to disparities in teaching standards and degree recognition. WBUHS became active on 1 January 2003 and oversees undergraduate, postgraduate, and post-doctoral programs in Modern Medicine, Homoeopathy, Ayurveda, Unani, Nursing, Pharmacy, Dental, and Paramedical sciences. The Governor of West Bengal serves as Chancellor, while the Vice-Chancellor acts as chief executive officer. As an affiliating university, WBUHS has jurisdiction over medical, AYUSH, paramedical, dental, nursing, and pharmacy colleges throughout West Bengal, with 124 affiliated institutions. In September 2017, it was recognized by the UGC under section 12-B of the UGC Act, 1956. The university also appears in the Nature Index, ranking 185th in India overall, 53rd in biological sciences, and 48th in health sciences. The West Bengal government has invested ₹102.75 crore in a new multi-story building for the university, officially inaugurated in March 2026, to centralize administrative offices and enhance academic facilities.
