TAMIL NADU FISHERIES UNIVERSITY
Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Fisheries University (TNJFU), formerly known as Tamil Nadu Fisheries University (TNFU), is a government fisheries university situated in the Vettar River View Campus in the southern part of Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu, India. It is about 10 km from the Nagapattinam Junction Railway Station and about 8 km from the Nagapattinam Bus Stand. The university was created after a High Level Committee on fisheries submitted proposals to then Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa in 2012, leading to the Tamil Nadu Fisheries University Act, 2012, assented to by President Pranab Mukherjee. The Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi, previously under Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, was converted into this separate university, making it the first state fisheries university in India. It began functioning in July 2012 and was renamed in 2017 through the Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Fisheries University, Chennai Act, 2017. The Governor of Tamil Nadu serves as Chancellor, and the Minister for Fisheries Department serves as Pro-chancellor, while a Vice-Chancellor manages daily administration. TNJFU has nine constituent colleges spread across Thoothukudi, Ponneri, Thalainayeru, Nagapattinam, and Chennai.
