GOVT. COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS, THRISSUR

Government College of Fine Arts, Thrissur is located in the heart of Thrissur city in Kerala, India. It started functioning in 1910 as a Technical Commercial Industrial School, providing industrial training to produce skilled craftsmen and vocational laborers. During the Second World War, it was renamed the 'Government Trade School,' and from 1943 to 1975 it was known as the Government Occupational Institute. In 1975, it was upgraded to the Govt. Institute of Fine Arts, marking a shift from vocational training toward a more aesthetic 'Fine Arts' orientation. In 1988, it began offering a National Diploma for five-year courses in Painting, Sculpture, and Applied Art. In 2000, the institute was affiliated with the University of Calicut and began offering a four-year Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree with specializations in Painting, Sculpture, and Applied Arts. In 2019, a new course in Art History and Visual Studies was introduced. The college has a faculty including a Principal and Heads of Departments for Sculpture, Applied Arts, Art History and Visual Studies, and Painting. Notable alumni include P. N. Menon, K. Karunakaran, Artist Namboothiri, Bharathan, and several other artists who have contributed to Indian art.
