St. Stephens's College

St. Stephen's College traces its history to St. Stephen's High School, founded in 1854 by Samuel Scott Allnutt. The college itself was founded on 1 February 1881 by the Cambridge Brotherhood, in support of the United Society Partners in the Gospel, with Allnutt as its first principal. It was first affiliated with the University of Calcutta, then Punjab University in 1882, before becoming a constituent college of the newly established University of Delhi in 1922. The college moved from Chandni Chowk to Kashmiri Gate in 1891, and then to its current location in the Delhi University Enclave in 1941, in a campus designed by Walter Sykes George. Women were first admitted in 1928, discontinued after Miranda House was founded in 1949, and resumed in 1975. The college is named after Saint Stephen, adopted as patron saint of Delhi after Christians were stoned during the 1857 uprising. It is one of the three founding colleges of the University of Delhi, along with Hindu College and Ramjas College, and today is co-educational, admitting students from across India and abroad. As of February 2017, its governing body decided to pursue institutional autonomy.
