It was founded in November 1988 by the Patna Province of the Society of Jesus, following the Jesuits' earlier establishment of St. Xavier's High School, Patna, in 1940. The college is named after St. Francis Xavier, a 16th-century Spanish Jesuit saint and missionary to India. It offers Ph.D. in Education, along with two-year undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Bachelor of Education and Master of Education, affiliated with Aryabhatta Knowledge University. The institution is approved by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) and accredited with an 'A' Grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The campus, spanning about 10,117.5 sq.m. in Digha, Patna, includes laboratories for various subjects, multipurpose halls, a library with over 13,000 books, two computer labs, boarding facilities, a gymnasium, outdoor fields, and a canteen. The St. Xavier's College of Education Alumni Association (SXCEAA), formed in 2003, organizes alumni activities. The college's sister institutions in Patna include St. Xavier's High School, St. Michael's High School, and St. Xavier's College.
