Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute
Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute (CNCI) is a 660-bedded cancer care hospital and research institute in Kolkata, West Bengal, and one of 27 regional cancer centres in India. It traces its origins to the Chittaranjan Cancer Hospital, inaugurated on 12 January 1950 by Nobel laureate Irène Joliot-Curie, named after Chittaranjan Das who donated land for it, and supported by Dr. B.C. Roy. In 1957, the Chittaranjan National Cancer Research Centre was established for cancer biology research, and in 1987 it merged with the hospital to form CNCI, with Dr. Jayashree Roychoudhury as its first director. CNCI operates two campuses: the original 200-bed Hazra Campus near Jatin Das Park metro station, and the newer Rajarhat (Newtown) Campus with 460–650 beds, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January 2022. The institute offers surgical, radiation, and medical oncology services, advanced imaging, palliative care, and community outreach. It operates as an autonomous body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and provides postgraduate, super-specialty, and diploma courses affiliated with WBUHS, NBEMS, and Jadavpur University.
