Madras Institute of Technology (MIT) is an engineering institute located in Chromepet, Chennai, India, and is one of the four autonomous constituent colleges of Anna University. It was founded in July 1949 by Chinnaswami Rajam under the University of Madras, making it the first self-financing engineering institute in India. Rajam received support from several distinguished citizens and donations from industry and the public to establish the institute. Initially, MIT offered three-year diploma courses (DMIT) for Science graduates, later transitioning to three-year B.Tech. degree courses after Anna University's formation in 1978. Since 1996, it has offered a four-year undergraduate program for students who completed the 12th board examinations. MIT pioneered new fields such as aeronautical engineering, automobile engineering, electronics engineering, and instrumentation technology, and later added programs in Production Engineering, Rubber and Plastics Technology, Computer Science Engineering, and Information Technology. The institute is governed by the Chancellor, Vice Chancellor, and Registrar of Anna University, with a Dean overseeing daily administration. Admissions are conducted through the Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions process. The Department of Aerospace Engineering, established in 1949, was the first in India to offer an undergraduate program in Aeronautical Engineering, while the Department of Automobile Engineering, also established in 1949, remains unique in offering both undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Automobile Engineering in India.
