Sri Pratap College, Srinagar

Sri Pratap College, known as SP College, is located at M.A. Road, Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India. It was established in 1905 by British social reformer Annie Besant, initially as an intermediate college by upgrading the Hindu High School, Srinagar, with M.U. Moore as its first principal. In 1911 the state government took it over, renaming it after Maharaja Pratap Singh, and it rose to degree level in Arts. It was later affiliated with the University of Punjab, Lahore, then Banaras Hindu University, and eventually the University of Kashmir after 1956. The college celebrated its centenary in 2005. In 1975, the arts faculty was delinked, making it an exclusively science institution offering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Biotechnology, and Information Technology. The college suffered heavy losses, including around 60,000 books, during the September 2014 flood. It has since become part of the Cluster University of Srinagar under the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan initiative, with plans to run a School of Sciences. The college is recognized by the UGC and has been accredited 'A+' by NAAC. It has discontinued its five-year integrated B.Sc.-M.Sc. programs as of 2022.
