It was established in 1962 by Karumuttu Thiagarajan Chettiar, a prominent figure in the South Indian textile industry. The institute is located on a 17-acre campus in the heart of Madurai city. Initially, TSM offered only Executive Development courses until 1971, after which part-time MBA courses began in 1972. Full-time MBA courses started in 1986, and full-time MCA courses were introduced in 1994, though the MCA programme was discontinued after 2009. It has been granted autonomous status by the UGC and Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU), and holds candidacy status for accreditation with the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). Admissions are based on national tests such as CAT, XAT, and MAT, or state-level TANCET. The institute also hosts YUKTI, a student-driven annual business school summit featuring management and cultural events.
