Ayurvedic & Unani Tibbia College

The Ayurvedic and Unani Tibbia College, also known as Tibbia College, is an institution of the Government of Delhi located in Karol Bagh, New Delhi. It traces its origins to 1882, when it was first established by Hakim Abdul Majeed in Gali Qasim Jan, Chandni Chowk, and later known as Madrasa Tibbia under the Anjuman-e-Tibbia society. Hakim Ajmal Khan expanded and improved the institution from 1903, extending its site to over 50 acres including a herbal garden. The college was formally founded by Charles Hardinge, 1st Baron Hardinge of Penshurst, on 29 March 1916, and inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi on 13 February 1921. The Partition Riots of 1947 severely disrupted its functioning, as refugees occupied its buildings and many staff and students migrated to Pakistan. The institution combines Ayurvedic and Unani medicine, offering bachelor's degrees (BAMS and BUMS) and postgraduate MD/MS courses in various specialties. In 1973, it became affiliated with the University of Delhi. Management was originally governed under the Tibbia College Act, 1952, later replaced by the Delhi Tibbia College (Take Over) Act, 1998, enforced from 1 May 1998. The college also has ties to the Hindustani Dawakhana and the Ayurvedic and Unani Tibbi Research Institute, which contributed to herbal medicine research.
