Institute of Physics (IOP),Bhubaneswar

Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar is an autonomous research institution of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India. It was founded in 1972 by Professor Bidhu Bhusan Das, then Director of Public Instruction, Odisha, with support from the Government of Odisha under education minister Banamali Patnaik. Dr. Trilochan Pradhan served as its first director, initiating theoretical research programs in various branches of physics. Early contributors included Prof. T. P. Das of SUNY, Albany, and Prof. Jagdish Mohanty of IIT Kanpur and Australian National University. In 1981, the institute relocated to its present campus near Chandrasekharpur, Bhubaneswar, and on 25 March 1985 it was taken over by the DAE, becoming an autonomous body. The institute conducts research in both theoretical and experimental physics, covering areas such as condensed matter theory, nuclear and high-energy physics, cosmology, string theory, and nanomaterials. Its experimental physics group operates an ion beam laboratory equipped with a 3MV tandem accelerator for studies including Rutherford back scattering, accelerator mass spectrometry, and nuclear reaction research. The institute also runs pre-doctoral (M.Phil.) and doctoral (PhD.) programs emphasizing research and teaching in physics.
