Raipur Institute of Medical Sciences

The Raipur Institute of Medical Sciences, commonly referred to as AIIMS Raipur, was established as part of the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), a government initiative launched in March 2006 to address regional imbalances in the availability of affordable, reliable tertiary healthcare services across India. It was one of six AIIMS-like medical institutes announced during the tenure of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government for under-served states, alongside institutes in Patna, Bhubaneswar, Bhopal, Jodhpur, and Rishikesh. These institutes were later retroactively grouped as 'Phase I institutes' of PMSSY. Initially, each institution was assigned funding of ₹332 crore, which was later increased to ₹820 crore in 2010. The six Phase I institutes, including the one in Raipur, became operational following an Ordinance issued in September 2012, which was subsequently replaced by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (Amendment) Bill, 2012, passed by both houses of Parliament in September 2012. This legislation granted these institutes autonomous operation and the status of Institutes of National Importance.
