NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF DESIGN, ASSAM
National Institute of Design, Assam, also known as NID Jorhat, is a design institute situated in Jorhat, Assam. Its foundation stone was laid on 19 February 2011 by then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, and funding for the institute was allocated in February 2014. The institute was formally inaugurated at Rajabari on 22 February 2019 by Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Suresh Prabhu via video telecast. It was created as part of India's National Design Policy, envisioned in early 2007 by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, to strengthen design education by setting up institutes modeled on NID Ahmedabad. Under this plan, four new NIDs were established in Andhra Pradesh (Amaravati), Assam (Jorhat), Madhya Pradesh (Bhopal), and Haryana (Kurukshetra). The Jorhat campus is located at Tocklai village on the banks of the Tocklai river, about 8 km from Jorhat Airport and 2.5 km from Jorhat Town railway station. The institute offers a four-year Bachelor of Design (B.Des) program with three specializations—Textile and Apparel Design, Communication Design, and Industrial Design—following a two-semester-per-year pattern, with a total of 75 seats available.
