National Institute of Technology, Karnataka

The National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), also known as NITK Surathkal and formerly Karnataka Regional Engineering College (KREC), is a public technical institution located in Surathkal, Mangaluru, in Dakshina Kannada, Karnataka. Its foundation stone was laid on 6 August 1960, and it began with undergraduate courses in Mechanical, Electrical, and Civil Engineering, initially affiliated with the University of Mysore. In 1980 it came under Mangalore University, before being elevated to National Institute of Technology status on 26 June 2002; it is now a Deemed University. The institute's 295.35-acre campus lies on National Highway 66 by the Arabian Sea, featuring a private beach, lighthouse, residential quarters, a large central library, computer centre, banks, schools, guest houses, a swimming pool, and playgrounds. NITK offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs in Engineering, Science, and Management across 14 departments and 11 support centres, with about 200 faculty, 300 support staff, 5,500 students, and 26,500 alumni worldwide. Admissions to undergraduate programs are through JEE (Mains), with reserved seats for Karnataka residents and foreign students under DASA, while postgraduate admissions rely on GATE scores.
