Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IIT Gandhinagar or IITGN) is a public technical university in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India, recognized as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India. Established in 2008 as one of eight new IITs announced by India's Ministry of Human Resource Development, it initially operated from a temporary campus at Vishwakarma Government Engineering College in Ahmedabad under the mentorship of IIT Bombay. Its permanent 400-acre campus, located on the banks of the Sabarmati river in Palaj, was leased from the Government of Gujarat for 99 years at a token rent of one rupee; regular classes began there around July 2015. The institute offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes through thirteen departments and seven centres, covering engineering, sciences, and humanities. Admissions to undergraduate engineering programmes occur through JOSAA counselling based on JEE-Advanced, while MSc admissions largely use IIT-JAM. NIRF ranked IIT Gandhinagar 36th overall among Indian institutions, 25th among engineering institutes, and 39th for research. The campus is India's first 5-star GRIHA LD certified campus and holds a 5-star 'Eat Right Campus' rating from FSSAI, featuring hostels, sports facilities, lakes, a swimming pool, and a central library.
