National Centre for Diseases Control

The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is an institute under the Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, established in July 1963 to conduct research in epidemiology and control of communicable diseases, reorganizing the former Malaria Institute of India. Its origins trace to the Central Malaria Bureau, founded in Kasauli in 1909, later renamed the Malaria Institute of India in 1938 and the National Institute of Communicable Diseases in 1963, before becoming the National Centre for Disease Control on 30 July 2009. Headquartered on Sham Nath Marg, New Delhi, it has nine branches across India advising state governments on public health, and is affiliated with Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Delhi. The centre comprises 15 technical divisions covering areas such as epidemiology, malariology, microbiology, and non-communicable diseases, and employs 434 officers across 5 regional branches and 20 metropolitan health surveillance units. It has investigated outbreaks including plague, SARS, meningitis, and avian influenza, and led India's response to COVID-19 genomic surveillance through the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomic Consortium. It also collaborates with the US CDC on the Global Disease Detection Regional Center.
