Dr. B. R. Ambedkar College

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar College was established in 1973 in Betai, a village in Nadia district, West Bengal, India. The area was historically backward, with more than ninety percent of its residents belonging to Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, Backward Class, and poor minority communities. Many residents were refugees who settled there after the 1947 Partition and the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. Motivated by a desire to educate their children, local residents, with the help of educationist Haran Chandra Biswas, founded the college. A building named Haran Chandra Smriti Bhawan was later constructed in his memory. The college offers undergraduate courses in arts, commerce, and science, with departments including Bengali, English, Education, History, Geography, Political Science, Philosophy, Economics, Sanskrit, Physical Education, Commerce, and Mathematics. It is affiliated with the University of Kalyani and is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The institution continues to serve as an important educational resource for the local community, providing access to higher education for students from historically disadvantaged backgrounds.
