NATIONAL LAW UNIVERSITY

National Law University, located in West Tripura, is part of the network of National Law Universities (NLUs) in India, public law schools created as part of second-generation reforms to legal education sought by the Bar Council of India. The first NLU, the National Law School of India University in Bangalore, admitted its first batch in 1988, and since then most Indian states have established their own NLUs, with 27 currently across the country. Admission to these universities, including this one, is generally conducted through the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), a highly competitive exam ranked among the top five toughest entrance examinations in India. NLUs typically have the Chief Justice of India or Chief Justices of respective High Courts serving as Chancellors, with retired judges and bureaucrats often serving as faculty and Vice-Chancellors. These universities offer integrated five-year law degree programmes combining law with another discipline such as arts, science, business administration, or commerce, and are recognized as autonomous, single-subject institutions with national status, established through specific state legislation.
