The National Museum Institute of the History of Art, Conservation and Museology (NMIHACM), later renamed the Indian Institute of Heritage, is an autonomous institute under India's Ministry of Culture, established on 27 January 1989 under the Societies Registration Act. It was granted deemed university status by the Ministry of Human Resource Development on 28 April 1989. Located within the National Museum premises in New Delhi, it has offered diploma, Masters and Doctoral studies since 1985 in history of art, conservation, restoration and museology. The institute collaborates with national institutions like the Archaeological Survey of India and National Gallery of Modern Art to improve teaching standards in heritage fields. Its functions are divided into departments of Archaeology, History of Art, Conservation, Museology, and Palaeography, Epigraphy and Numismatics (established 2023). NMIHACM undertakes heritage projects such as documenting intangible cultural heritage in Ladakh and Western Uttar Pradesh, establishing museum corners in schools, and installing artworks in AIIMS pediatric wards. Through its Department of Museology, it has organized exhibitions including 'First Frames', 'Nako – Living Cultural Heritage', and 'Ehasas: Senses and Images' for the visually impaired. The institute offers five courses at the Masters level.
