SYMBIOSIS Institute of Management Studies

Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies (SIMS), Pune was established on February 8, 1993, by Shri S. B. Mujumdar, initially operating from Symbiosis Pre-Primary School premises at 15 Prabhat Lane. Its first director, Prof. A. Balasubramanian, shaped its early programs, which included a full-time Management Development Program and a correspondence MBA. In the early 2000s, under Defence Minister George Fernandes, the government leased 4 acres of Defence land in Khadki Cantonment for a dedicated campus, designed by architect Razzak Sheikh, featuring Greek-style architecture, a residential community for 600 students, and modern amenities. In 2008, SIMS became a constituent of Symbiosis International University, consolidating its programs into a comprehensive MBA with specializations in Human Resources, Marketing, Finance, and Operations. Since 2002, it has functioned as a Public Private Partnership with the Ministry of Defence, primarily serving Defence Personnel and their dependents, with some civilian seats. Admission is based on SNAP scores. The institute is ISO 9001:2015 certified, UGC approved, NAAC 'A++' accredited, and is currently headed by Maj Gen (Dr.) Rohit Bakshi (Retd), who became Director in June 2025. SIMS also hosts events like the Global Leaders Summit, SIMSARC research conference, and TEDx talks.
