Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Government Law College
Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College, commonly known by its former name Madras Law College, is a law school located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Its origins trace to informal law classes conducted by George Norton in the early 19th century, with John Bruce Norton appointed as the first law professor in 1855. The institution became an independent Law College in 1891 under the Director of Public Instruction, moving into a Henry Irwin-designed building near the Madras High Court in 1899. Renamed in 1990 to honor B. R. Ambedkar's birth centenary, it was transferred in 1997 from the University of Madras to the newly formed Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University. The college offers a 5-year integrated B.A., B.L. and a 3-year B.G.L. program, with Tamil introduced as a medium of instruction from 1973-1974. Due to structural damage from nearby Metro Rail construction, the college split into two campuses in 2018: one at Pudupakkam Village for five-year law students, and another at Pattaraiperumbudur Village for three-year law students. The college does not provide on-campus hostels but maintains separate hostels for men and women in Chennai.
