Wilson College Chowpatty Mumbai

Wilson College, founded in 1832 by Scottish missionary Rev. John Wilson, is one of India's oldest colleges, predating the University of Mumbai, to which it is affiliated, by 25 years. It began as the Ambroli English School in Girgaum, later evolving into a collegiate institution in 1836, and on 14 December 1861 its collegiate section became the first privately owned, non-government institution affiliated to the university. In 1952 management passed to an autonomous Board of Governors, and since 1963 it has been run by the John Wilson Education Society. It is a Christian minority institution closely related to the Church of North India (CNI). The college was awarded an A rating by NAAC in 2005 and granted autonomy by Mumbai University in November 2021. Its building, constructed in 1889 and designed by John Adams in the domestic Victorian Gothic style, is a Grade III heritage structure overlooking Girgaum Chowpatty. Wilson College offers university-aided courses in Arts and Sciences as well as self-financed courses in Mass Media, Information Technology, Management Studies, Biotechnology, and Electronics & Computer Science. Its annual magazine, The Wilsonian, has been published since 1909. The Postal Department of India issued commemorative stamps for the college in 2004 and 2007.
