INDIAN NATIONAL SCIENCE ACADEMY, NEW DELHI

The Indian National Science Academy (INSA) is a national academy located in New Delhi, serving Indian scientists across all branches of science and technology. Its origins trace back to the National Institute of Sciences in India (NISI), founded in 1935 in Calcutta, which was recognised by the Government of India as a Premier National Scientific Society. NISI moved to Delhi in 1951, and in 1970 it was renamed the Indian National Science Academy. In 1968, the Government of India mandated INSA to represent India in international science forums. The academy's main building, the Golden Jubilee Building, is located at Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg and was completed in 1996. INSA's membership includes Foundation Fellows, Fellows (FNA), and Foreign Fellows, elected by nomination. It promotes science in India, safeguards scientists' interests, fosters international collaboration, and offers opinions on national issues. INSA has instituted 59 awards across four categories to recognize scientific excellence. It publishes three peer-reviewed journals: Proceedings of the Indian National Science Academy, Indian Journal of Pure and Applied Mathematics, and Indian Journal of History of Science, along with yearbooks, annual reports, and other publications. In 2015, INSA established the Indian National Young Academy of Sciences (INYAS) for young scientists.
