St. Xavier's College

St. Xavier's College was founded on 2 January 1869 in Bombay by German Jesuits, beginning with only two students. Swiss Jesuit Joseph Michael Willi served as its first principal from 1869 to 1873. The college gained formal recognition from Bombay University on 30 January 1869. It expanded rapidly from 1884 to 1914 under Principal Frederick Dreckmann, adding facilities like a hostel (1909) and a science wing (1912). Women were first admitted in 1912. During World War I, German Jesuits were interned, causing administrative disruption later eased by other European Jesuits. By the 1920s, the college added science departments such as Chemistry and Biology, and later Sociology, Anthropology, and Psychology departments. The 1930s saw major architectural expansion under Gonzalo Palacios, including a new library and chapel. After India's independence, Hindi began being taught in 1949. The college is affiliated with the University of Mumbai, offering undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Arts, Science, Commerce, and Management. It was the first college granted autonomy by the University of Mumbai in 2010 and received an 'A+' NAAC grade in 2006. Its South Mumbai campus is built in Indo-Gothic architecture and is a recognized heritage structure. Notable visitors include Hillary Clinton (2009) and Barack Obama (2010).
