SREENARAYANAGURU OPEN UNIVERSITY
Sreenarayanaguru Open University (SGOU) is a state open university situated in Kollam, Kerala, established by The Sreenarayanaguru Open University Act, 2021 (Kerala Act No 1 of 2021). It was created through a 45th Ordinance of 2020, promulgated by the Governor of Kerala on 25 September 2020, and inaugurated by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on 2 October 2020 in Kollam. It is the first open university in Kerala and was approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 2021. The university aimed to unify distance education courses previously offered by Kannur University, Mahatma Gandhi University, University of Calicut, and University of Kerala. However, the University of Calicut and University of Kerala continue offering distance programmes not provided by SGOU, following a 2022 Kerala High Court order and a subsequent 2022 government amendment. The university is named after Narayana Guru and is headquartered at Kureepuzha, Kollam, with plans for a new headquarters in Mundakkal, Kollam city, following a 2025 land acquisition. P M Mubarak Pasha was its first vice-chancellor, and S V Sudheer its first pro-vice-chancellor. The university comprises seven schools of study, including Humanities and Social Sciences, Sciences, Languages, Law, Business and Development Studies, Communications and Information Sciences, Interdisciplinary Studies, and Vocational Education and Training.
