Jalpaiguri Institute of Technology

Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College (JGEC) was established on 7 August 1961 as Jalpaiguri Engineering College, initially not fully run by the West Bengal government. In 1963 the state assumed full control, renaming it Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College, making it the first engineering college in North Bengal and the second oldest in West Bengal. It began with Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering, later adding Computer Science and Electronics during 1980–2000. The college was affiliated successively with the University of Calcutta, the University of North Bengal (1963–1999), and the West Bengal University of Technology, before being granted Autonomous status by the UGC on 3 January 2012; it is now affiliated with the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology. JGEC offers AICTE-approved, NBA-accredited, and NAAC-accredited programs, including B.Tech (via WBJEE/JELET) and M.Tech (via PGET/GATE). In 2009, The Telegraph ranked it 3rd among West Bengal's engineering colleges. The 168-acre campus includes five hostels—four for men and one for women—each with its own mess committee. The institute is recognized as a major technical education hub in North Bengal with a strong placement record and alumni network.
