NIAMT, located in Hatia near Ranchi, Jharkhand, was established in 1966 by the Government of India in collaboration with UNDP–UNESCO to produce qualified engineers for the foundry and forge industries. Originally named the National Institute of Foundry and Forge Technology (NIFFT), it is now a Deemed to be University under the Ministry of Education and one of the autonomous institutes in the NIT+ system. The institute offers postdoctoral, doctoral, and master's programs, as well as bachelor's and advanced diploma courses. Departments have expanded over time, including Manufacturing Engineering (1985, later replaced by Mechanical Engineering in 2020), Materials and Metallurgical Engineering (1998), and Electronics and Computer Engineering (2021). Courses were once affiliated with Ranchi University and later Jharkhand University of Technology, but since gaining Deemed University status (approved in 2021 and upgraded in 2024), NIAMT operates independently, awarding its own degrees. The campus spans 65 acres in Hatia, about 7.2 km from Ranchi, and includes hostels, academic buildings, laboratories, and sports facilities. It also provides consultancy, documentation, and information retrieval services in manufacturing engineering, industrial metallurgy, and foundry and forge sectors worldwide.
