Central Electro-Chemical Research Institute, Karaikudi

Central Electro Chemical Research Institute (CECRI) was founded on 25 July 1948 at Karaikudi in Tamil Nadu, and formally came into existence in January 1953. It is recognized as the largest electrochemical research institute in South Asia and ranks among the largest research institutes for electrochemistry in the world. CECRI is one of a chain of forty national laboratories operating under the aegis of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), headquartered in New Delhi. In addition to its main campus in Karaikudi, CECRI maintains regional centres to extend its research and outreach activities. These include the CECRI Chennai Unit, located at the CSIR Complex, TTTI, Taramani, Chennai, and the CECRI Corrosion Research Centre, situated at Mandapam Camp. These centres allow the institute to focus on specialized areas such as corrosion research in addition to its broader electrochemical studies. As part of the CSIR network, CECRI contributes to scientific and industrial research in India, particularly in the field of electrochemistry, supporting both academic and applied research initiatives across the country.
