NIPER-Guwahati started functioning in September 2008 and was inaugurated on 16 September 2008 by Union Minister for Fertilizers and Chemicals and Steel, Shri Ram Vilas Paswan. The foundation stone for its permanent campus at Changsari, Guwahati was laid on 30 May 2015 by Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers Shri Ananth Kumar, in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Shri Tarun Gogoi and Minister of State Shri Sarbananda Sonowal. The institute offers a 2-year postgraduate degree program, including M.S. (Pharm.), M.Pharm., and M.Tech. degrees across eight disciplines: Pharmacology & Toxicology, Pharmacy Practice, Pharmaceutical Analysis, Pharmaceutics, Biotechnology, Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Technology (Formulations), and Medical Devices. It also offers a 5-year PhD program. The M.Tech. in Medical Devices was introduced in collaboration with IIT Guwahati. Admissions are based on the Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test (GPAT), followed by a Joint Entrance Examination conducted by the NIPERs. In 2024, the institute was ranked 12th in India in the pharmacy category by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). The academic departments include Pharmacology and Toxicology, Biotechnology, Pharmacy Practice, Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Analysis, Medical Devices, and Pharmaceutical Technology (Formulations).
