Govt. College for Women Nawakadal, Srinagar

Government College for Women, Nawakadal Srinagar, commonly known as Women's College Nawakadal or Nowkadal College, is located on the southern bank of the river Jhelum near the Nawakadal Bridge in the Old City of Srinagar, known locally as Shehr-i-Khaas. It is the only institution of higher education for women in this part of the city, about 6 km south of Lal Chowk and 1.5 km west of the historical Jamia Masjid Srinagar. The college campus was originally a women's hospital founded by Maharaja Pratap Singh in 1890. In 1952, Prime Minister Sheikh Mohamad Abdullah ordered its elevation to a women's college, which was achieved in 1961 under Prime Minister Bakshi Ghulam Mohamad, starting with Arts and Science subjects, 19 faculty members, and 50 students. The college is affiliated with the University of Kashmir and is recognized by the UGC under categories 2B and 12F. It is the only women's institution in the Kashmir Valley offering Commerce and Management courses. Courses offered include Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science (Medical and Non-Medical), Bachelor of Commerce (Computerized Accountancy), Bachelor of Business Administration, and Bachelor of Arts (Social Science). In 2015, the NAAC accredited the college with Grade 'A'.
