In 2017, FDDI was upgraded to an Institute of National Importance by an act of parliament. Admissions to its undergraduate and postgraduate courses are conducted through the FDDI All India Selection Test (FDDI-AIST), a one-stage national-level entrance examination followed by counselling. FDDI offers professional courses in Fashion Design, Footwear Design & Production, Retail & Fashion Management, and Leather Lifestyle and Product Designing, with long-term courses structured as a four-year Bachelor of Design program. The institute also engages in industrial consultancy, research and development, and training of industry professionals. Its facilities include computer labs, photography labs, pattern making and draping labs, weaving labs, dyeing and printing labs, technology labs, garment technology labs, leather design labs, accessory design labs, and digital classrooms.
