Bankura College of Education

Bankura Sammilani College was established on 1 September 1948 by the Bankura Sammilani Registered Society to promote higher education in Bankura and neighbouring districts, starting with 100 boy students and 6 teachers in intermediate science. It became co-educational from the 1992–1993 session and transitioned from a trust college to a government-aided college on 22 April 1977. Initially affiliated with Calcutta University from 6 August 1948, it came under Burdwan University's affiliation in 1960, and is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The college originally ran in three shifts—B.Com in the evening (introduced 1959), B.A in the morning (introduced 1970), and B.Sc during the day (introduced 1959)—but now operates in two shifts, with B.Com in the morning and B.A/B.Sc courses during the day. It currently offers 16 honours courses across Arts, Science, and Commerce. Extra activities include Spoken English classes with BBC Bankura Branch, a Computer Literacy Program with Webel Informatics Limited since 1996, and courses with the Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India since March 2009. Notable alumnus Subrat Dutta is an actor. It is the first NAAC-accredited college in Bankura District, receiving a B++ grade.
