GOVERNMENT MEDICAL COLLEGE, THE NILGIRIS
Government Medical College and Hospital, The Nilgiris is a government medical college and hospital situated in Udagamandalam city in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu, within the Nilgiri mountains range. It offers a professional MBBS degree, with studies beginning in the academic year 2021–2022. Former Chief Minister K Palaniswami laid the foundation stone on 10 July 2020 via video conferencing, with an 18-month completion timeline set, jointly funded by the Union and State Governments. Construction faced delays, with only four blocks completed by October 2022 and residential quarters, cafeteria, faculty rooms, and hostels still incomplete. On 12 January 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the college along with 11 other medical colleges in Tamil Nadu, in the presence of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. The campus spans 40 acres, comprising 25 acres in Indu Nagar, Udagamandalam, and 15 acres in adjoining areas, and includes quarters for doctors, nurses, and paramedical staff, along with 750 hostel rooms for medical students. The college admits 150 students annually in the MBBS program. It is affiliated with Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University and recognized by the National Medical Commission.
