Chandigarh University

Chandigarh University (CU) is a private research university whose main campus is located at Gharuan in Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar district (Mohali), Punjab, within the Chandigarh Capital Region. It was established in 2012 through The Chandigarh University Act, passed by the Punjab State Legislature, which came into force on 10 July 2012 and set up the university as a private, self-financed institution headquartered at Gharuan. The university traces its origins to the Chandigarh Group of Colleges, founded by Satnam Singh Sandhu at Landran in Mohali in 2001. It is recognized by the University Grants Commission under Section 2(f) and holds degree-conferring authority under Section 22(1) of the UGC Act, 1956. The university has grown into a multidisciplinary institution, earning an A+ grade from NAAC in its first accreditation cycle and ranking among leading institutions in the National Institutional Ranking Framework. It has pursued extensive international collaboration, reportedly signing MoUs with 306 foreign universities by 2021. In 2024, media reports indicated approval for an additional campus in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, signaling the university's move toward a multi-campus structure beyond its original Punjab base.
