GOVERNMENT MEDICAL COLLEGE KOLLAM
Government Medical College, Kollam, formerly known as ESIC Medical College, Parippally, is the first government medical college in Kollam district, Kerala, India. Situated 21 km south of Kollam city and 9.6 km east of Paravur town, the college was originally constructed by the Employees State Insurance Corporation as its second medical college project in India and the first in Kerala. It was inaugurated on 21 December 2013 by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, with 33 blocks making it the largest medical college in Kerala by building count. In 2014, the central government withdrew from the ESIC project, and in 2016 the Kerala state government took over the institution. After staff appointments were made, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated it as Kollam Government Medical College on 14 August 2016. The first batch of MBBS students began classes on 23 August 2017. The campus spans 33 acres with 28 buildings totaling 14,31,600 sq ft. The college conducts MBBS, postgraduate medical degrees, and a diploma in medical laboratory technology, and includes a modern mortuary complex and a forensic medicine department.
