National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal

The National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) traces its origins to the Imperial Institute for Animal Husbandry & Dairying, established in Bangalore in 1923 as a centre for dairy education. In 1927, Mahatma Gandhi and Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya trained there to learn modern cattle management methods, and Gandhi later wrote articles on dairying's importance, influencing post-independence policies like the Key Village Scheme and Gosamvardhana Council. In 1936, the institute was renamed the Imperial Dairy Institute, and in 1955 it was relocated to Karnal, Haryana, and renamed the National Dairy Research Institute. The original Bangalore site became NDRI's southern regional station, and an eastern regional station was established at Kalyani, West Bengal, in 1964. In 1970, NDRI was brought under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). Since 1989, NDRI has held Deemed University status. The institute provides education in the field of dairying and is considered one of India's premier institutions in the dairy sector.
